Schools

Each year, The School of Toronto Dance Theatre’s programs for schools encourage hundreds of students to experience and explore the physical movements of contemporary dance.

The perfect complement to your arts curriculum, we are delighted to offer a range of educational activities including:

Student matinées

Featuring dancers from our Professional Training Program in new works and classic repertory; all performances are held in our on-site theatre, located in the heart of historic Cabbagetown.

Designed for a creative learning experience, our student matinées cost $5.50 per student (including HST)**.  During the matinée, your students will experience:

  • Performances of classic and/or new works by renowned choreographers (approximately 1 hour)
  • Introductions to each work by the Artistic Director
  • Question & answer period immediately following the performance, where students are introduced to the dancers, and encouraged to find out more about contemporary dance (approximately 30 minutes).
  • Optional, hour-long master classes, usually scheduled before the matinée performance. Please contact us for class costs and availability.
    (Alternative dates/times may be arranged).

Master Classes

On-site classes with our highly regarded faculty and talented live accompanists, are tailored to meet the individual needs of your school group. These classes usually take place before a matineé and last for one hour, providing a fulfilling, whole-day learning experience for your students. Please contact us for class costs and availability.

Group visits and guided tours

For small groups of students, the School can provide students considering a career in contemporary dance the opportunity to observe select professional classes.  Students will be exposed to a variety of contemporary dance techniques and gain a better understanding of a professional training program. During their visit, a tour of our heritage designated facility will be arranged with a member of staff.

School outreach visits

A limited number of outreach visits are arranged throughout the year for local schools.  These visits include a class led by a member of faculty, assisted by second year Professional Training Program students.  Our students will work with small groups within your class to develop a short phrase of choreography and develop movement, rhythm, and musicality.
