I would like to thank this group of very talented young dancers for their collaborative effort and devotion to this complex choreographic work. Their stories formed the kernel of the inspiration. Their enthusiasm and openness brought happiness and excitement to every rehearsal. I am also thankful to the faculty and staff for this opportunity to work with the school again. Big thank you to Jennifer Dallas for taking up a huge challenge and creating the remarkable costumes.

Themes I am currently focused on in my practice surround gravity, space, and mortality. The latter is seemingly an odd subject for a group of dancers just embarking on careers, but the graduating class was eager to work with weight, both physically and metaphorically. I choreograph intuitively and am inspired by the people that surround me. This piece would not exist in this form without each of the 15 dancers.

This is the inaugural Kathryn Ash Choreographic Commission. The award is given in honour of the late Kathryn Ash, who was a tremendous friend to the School, serving on our Board for 18 years, and as President from 1995-2008. The award will be given annually to a choreographer, ideally a graduate, selected to create a new work for our students.

For quite some time, I have been interested in cortical hemispheric specialization (right and left brain function). Additionally, I am curious about our individual preferential sensory dominant traits. How do these preferences affect the way we perceive the world? How do they allow us to communicate or move our bodies? In this process, the dancers created gestures, movement phrases, and partnering while having their dominant hands or dominant eyes restricted. This study is a culmination of some of this research. I wish to thank Megan Nadain for all of her assistance. I dedicate this work to the dancers.

“The deep structure of change is decay.” Decay, the degradation of localized high quality to chaotic dispersal “is ultimately natural, motiveless and purposeless.” (Peter Atkins); “Thus the device by which an organism maintains itself stationary at a fairly high level of orderliness (a fairly low level of entropy) really consists of continually sucking orderliness from its environment.” (Erwin Schrodinger); from Modern Science Writing - Richard Dawkins.

The first solo was performed by Laurence Lemieux, the trio by Naoko Murakoshi, Miriane Braaf, and Bill Coleman, and the second solo by Coralee McLaren.

A special thank you to Christopher House, Cheryl Lalonde, and Toronto Dance Theatre. The original creation of this work was produced by Toronto Dance Theatre with the generous assistance of the Laidlaw Foundation.
