Earth dance, wire dance is a technically challenging piece, requiring the dancer to move with intense speed, precision and groundedness. The work was inspired by the very talented and driven second-year class that I originally set the work on. It's a joyous celebration of fierce movement, youth, and sexual energy. - S.I.

“A great weakness no doubt, for a person to consist entirely in a collection of moments; a great strength also; it is dependent upon memory, and our memory of a moment is not informed of everything that has happened since, this moment which it has registered endures still, lives still and with it the person whose form is outlined in it.” - Marcel Proust, “Remembrance of Things Past”

This study/sketch began with the artwork of Marc Séquin (survol) and the writings of Proust and Anne Michaels. I am inspired by the dancers generosity and patience in this process. I thank them as well as Patricia Miner and Jeremy Mimnagh. - D.T.

Angel apart, assembling (May 1, 2008)

I work abstractly and intuitively, but certain physical themes and symbols have been consistently present in my work of late; hands and arms reaching forward or outstretched can be considered gestures of yearning and readiness; community; angels and birds. As well, I have questions about the use of music to support or create an emotional state for dance. Working in silence, I am challenging myself and the students to create melody and satisfying rhythm from the body alone. - S. I.
